Restoration of Ynysbwllog Aqueduct
and Three Locks Between Tonna and Abergawed
Objective 1 and Neath Port Talbot’s Local Regeneration Fund form
the funding package for this project. The project will secure
navigation of a 9km section of the Neath Canal from Bridge Street
in Neath town centre, to Abergarwed, south of Resolven, in the Vale
of Neath. To achieve this a series of component projects will be
necessary:

Construction of a new aqueduct across the River Neath at
Ynysbwllog, north of Aberdulais Falls

Restoration of Machin lock

Restoration of upper and lower locks at Cyd Terrace
The scheme will also enable navigation over a longer stretch of
canal as far as Neath town centre. The project will contribute to
the economic regeneration of the valley settlements in particular,
through the canal becoming a tourist and leisure attraction. As a
result of the scheme the canal will attract investment in
commercial boat operations in the short term, and commercial spin
off through increased demand for accommodation and other canal
based facilities in future, such as pubs and restaurants. All of
these will result in the creation of local employment and tourist
spend in the area.
Navigation of the canal will reduce the peripherality of the
rural areas through the strengthening of physical links with Neath
town centre. The canal will link to a termination basin next to the
Castle and the historic town centre, which is the subject of an
ongoing regeneration programme. The canal also forms an integral
part of a 10 year strategy vision for the town centre. The project
will therefore provide added value beyond the regeneration of rural
communities in the Vale of Neath.
