Celebrations at Building Control Award Ceremony

03.02.2009

The construction industry in Neath Port Talbot was in the spotlight this week.

Builders and developers were invited to attend an evening of celebration where 34 nominees were put forward for awards.

The prestigious Building Control Awards Ceremony is an annual event and is hosted by Neath Port Talbot Council.

The LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards are a national initiative that rewards good building practice.

This is the sixth year the awards have been held not only to promote the building control service at the Council but to encourage high standards of workmanship, management and health and safety within the industry.

Held at Blanco's Hotel, the event this year was sponsored by Fairwood Fabrications, Lliw Building Supplies, Melin Energy Consultants and Blanco's Hotel.

Many aspects of building work are taken into consideration by the Council's building surveyors when deciding nominations. Matters such as:

" cooperation with building control
" compliance with building regulations
" quality control and workmanship
" speed of fault rectification
" site environment
" health and safety
" provisions to benefit people with disabilities

Nine awards for nine separate categories were presented. The winners were:

" home extensions and alterations - Wayne Tatchell
" home conversions - Prestige Developments Ltd
" commercial conversions - Jistcourt (South Wales) Ltd
" new dwellings up to 10 units - Michael Mainwaring
" new dwellings over 10 units - Ian Gorvett
" social/affordable housing - Hale Construction Ltd
" sustainability - Burmeister & Wain, Scandinavian Contractors A/S, Aaldorg Energie technik A/S
" commercial developments up to £2 million - Ralph & Doherty Building Contractors Ltd
" public buildings - C J Construction Ltd

Local winners will now go forward to the South Wales regional finals, and from there, if successful, to the National Awards to be held in London later in the year.

Presenting the awards to winners at the ceremony, Deputy Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Aly Thomas, said, "The award highlights the importance of building control in achieving high standards of workmanship, safety and welfare as well as giving well deserved recognition to construction professionals in the Neath Port Talbot area.

"I am proud to see Neath Port Talbot builders at the forefront of building construction. I congratulate all the nominees for their high standards of workmanship and wish them well in the regional awards."

Head of Planning Services, Geoff White, added, "These awards are unique. Building Control surveyors nominate building works which have achieved excellence and they are judged not just for how they look but, more importantly, the processes that go behind the scenes. This is the only award of its kind to cover all forms of building construction."

Councillor Thomas went on to praise the good working relationship between the building control department and the building contractors who work together effectively to resolve any problems if they arise.
