WATERFALL WALKS IN THE VALE OF NEATH

Introduction

Nowhere else in Wales is there such a richness and diversity of waterfalls within such a small area as can be found in the Vale of Neath. This abundance has led to the region becoming known as 'Waterfall Country'.

This guide provides an introduction to the wooded valleys on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the often secret waters they contain. Also included are the more easily accessible Melincourt and Aberdulais falls and the cascades at the Gnoll Country Park in Neath.

The deep gorges of the rivers Mellte, Hepste and Nedd Fechan, between the villages of Pontneddfechan and Ystradfellte, provide opportunities for the casual walker and the more experienced. Many of the falls are spectacular and worth visiting more than once through the changing seasons.

Included here is a pictorial guide to the falls with the more accessible pathways to Sgwd Gwladys clearly marked. The descriptions are to guide the reader and to whet the appetite for exploring this little known region.

For Other Routes Mentioned it is Meant Only as a Pictorial Souvenir

CAUTION

The routes beyond Sgwd Gwladys and especially along the rivers of Mellteand Hepste, including the Scwd yr Eira Falls can be very dangerous. The less fit are not advised to attempt them.

Walks on the Hepste and Mellte are best started from Gwaun Hepste car park (reached by taking the minor road off the A4059 about a mile north of Penderyn, forking left in another mile and turn left again a few hundred yards later). Waymarked paths give a choice of routes from here. It is important to be appropriately dressed and shod, and to take account of the weather conditions.

Walk times shown refer to times for fit, experienced walkers. Other visitors should allow for extra time and rest stops.
